How do blu-ray players upscale standard definition DVD's? - good dvd players for high definition tv

I know most of Blu-ray high-class and standard-definition DVD to adapt and do so in an HDTV, but how it is done? I saw several standard-definition DVDs in my PS3 and although I know that is not shown in true HD, and improved fair, they are still great.
